Basic Stitches for Beginners

In this post I will explain the first 5 basic stitches that I was taught.
Learning a variety of stitches is one of the first things any beginner should definitely learn. Different stitches allow you to give a different look to your garment/project and can also allow different levels of strength. I'm just a beginner but this is what I have learnt so far:


Straight Stitch

The Straight Stitch is the most common stitches in sewing. It is a very easy stitch that is easy to sew by hand. This stitch is used for simple hemming, decorative stitching and to gather fabric. When using this stitch to gather material we use a longer stitch length. Look out for a post in the future on techniques for gathering fabric.

Zig-Zag Stitch

This stitch is generally stronger than the straight stitch and is often used to reinforce button holes. This stitch is most commonly used when sewing stretch fabrics, this is because it has some "give" to it, you can pull on the fabric without breaking your seams. Another use for the zig zag stitch is sewing appliqués onto fabrics.

Overcast Stitch
An overcast stitch is typically used to finish raw edges and seems and prevent fraying  It is very similar to the zig zag stitch!

Blanket Stitch
As the name of this stitch suggests, it is often found on blankets. This stitch is used to give a decorative edge on thick fabrics. This stitch is often used with unhemmed edges, so if you're not a fan of hemming then this is the stitch for you!

Slip Stitch

The slip stitch is used for sewing sews so that they aren't visible, this seam is sewn from the outside of the garment.
